the congenital landscape

Born and raised in Denmark, Steen Doessing grew up surrounded by water. The ocean, lakes, and rivers were ever-present, shaping his senses with their sound, scent, and shifting light. To him, water represents life itself—an embodiment of nature’s calm, power, and balance. It is where he comes from, and his fascination with it remains endless. Often, he can sit by the shoreline for hours without taking a single photograph, simply observing the sea. Unsurprisingly, water is a constant presence in his work.

To many, Doessing’s photographs evoke tranquility, serenity, and Zen-like stillness—yet they also carry a quiet sense of drama. He is often asked whether this reflects his inner state or serves as an escape from the world. His answer is simple: this is a state he celebrates—a state of harmony and equilibrium.

Using long exposures, sometimes lasting hours, Doessing captures the slow-motion rhythm of infinite movement surrounding still objects. These elements blend into a single visual plane, where resilience meets transience. The steadfastness of static forms against the gentle yet insistent flow of water becomes, for him, a visual metaphor for balance and endurance.

Deeply influenced by his lifelong proximity to water, Doessing’s work is a meditation on the intimacy and beauty inherent in the landscapes that surround us. He hopes this love of the natural world is evident in every image he creates.

Steen Doessing’s work has been widely exhibited in solo and group shows across the UK, the US, and Europe. His photographs have been featured in numerous national and international publications and have received multiple awards, including "European Photographer of the Year" in 2011 for his image "Calm Before the Storm".
